Senior Spotlight: Sofia Cabrera

Recently, the English department at Florida State University had the opportunity to interview graduating senior, Sofia Cabrera. In the Spring 2022 semester, Sofia will graduate from Florida State with her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a minor in education. When she was younger, Sofia wanted to become a teacher. However, throughout high school, Sofia interned at a law firm in Miami. This internship solidified her future goals. As an English major, Sofia’s sharp reading and writing skills will prepare her for a career in law. She plans to apply for law school this semester and begin in the upcoming fall semester. Her dream law schools are University of Miami, where she could become a Cane, or Florida State University, where she could continue her studies as a ‘Nole.

Sofia reflects on her favorite classes that she has taken at FSU. Her favorites are Perspectives on the Short Story and Women in Literature. Both were taught by Carley Robertson. During the Summer 2020 semester, Sofia took Women in Literature, and she enjoyed this course that Robertson taught. She knew her second class with Robertson would be enjoyable as well. Sofia appreciated how Robertson chose stories and texts that were interesting for class discussions. Sofia also states, “Robertson was a great professor and was very understanding during the pandemic circumstances.” Sofia looked forward to class each day. As an English major, Sofia’s classes are held near the Williams, Diffenbaugh, and Westcott buildings, making these her favorite spots to visit on campus. She also likes to try different coffee shops around the Tallahassee area. She specifically enjoys Catalina’s Café for its coffee and bagels. In addition, she studies at Greenwise because of the quiet environment upstairs.

Sofia’s favorite faculty member at FSU is Jack Clifford, the media specialist for the English department. As Sofia’s internship supervisor, Clifford has become a supportive mentor for her and gives her great feedback on her writing. She not only writes for the English department news page, but she also writes for the Her Campus FSU newsletter. A few of Sofia’s articles for the English department can be viewed here, here, here, and here. The link to her HCFSU account can also be found here.

Sofia has been at Florida State University since summer of 2019. Since she began, Sofia has learned valuable lessons about the school and about herself. For new students at FSU, Sofia encourages them to get involved and make a name for themselves. They should find organizations that they are not only interested in but also passionate about. FSU has wonderful opportunities for students to get involved. In the process, one can meet new people and make connections for the future.

According to Sofia, she would have wanted to join more organizations related to law. During her freshman year, she had interest in the prelaw society, but she chose to get involved with her English major in other ways. Despite this, Sofia does not have any regrets about her decision to attend Florida State. As a Degree in Three candidate, Sofia reflects on the past two and half years at FSU. For students who graduate next year, Sofia encourages them to enjoy every moment at this university. She even offers advice for those who are nervous about graduating within the next year. She hopes that graduating seniors do not stress about the future; they should keep an open mind as everything falls into place. Sofia’s time at FSU has allowed her to become independent, and she feels nervous yet hopeful for her future in law school.
