Where Are They Now?: Moriah Iglesias

Updated: Jan 24, 2022

For our first article in the “Where Are They Now?” series, we interviewed Moriah Iglesias, a recent graduate and former intern with Editing Internship Program. Moriah graduated in the summer of 2020 as an English major with a concentration in Editing, Writing, and Media (EWM).

Initially, Moriah applied to the EIP looking for a hands-on experience that involved writing and social media that could satisfy the editing internship requirement for her major. She also felt that the EIP would be a good resource to help her build a career later on. She began the internship in Spring 2020 as the sole intern and helped develop the program’s list of internship opportunities as well as its social media platforms and content. In the summer, the program brought in two new interns and Moriah stayed with the program in a managerial role where she would help plan social media content, write blog posts, and develop the website. According to Moriah, this role helped her “learn to meet deadlines, work well with others, and find creative ways to reach the audience of students at FSU.” These skills would prepare her for future job opportunities in the field of communications.

Since finishing the EIP, Moriah has stayed busy with a variety of work experiences. In the summer of 2020, she received a job offer from a non-profit in Tallahassee, Elder Care Services. While there, she worked as the Communications and Development Coordinator which involved public relations, social media work, as well as event planning and fundraising. In September of 2021, Moriah left Elder Care Services to work for Evergent Technologies in Denver, Colorado as a Marketing Communications Executive. Evergent is a SaaS (software as a service) technology service company that provides an agile and scalable customer lifecycle management interface that which helps SaaS based e-commerce businesses to handle and retain customers.

Finding these opportunities proved to be a challenge given the large number of graduates returning to the workforce in a post-COVID world which created a much more competitive job market, especially when Moriah began her job search back in February. She provided valuable insight into the current job market, stating that “a lot of employers are looking for entry roles right now, but they’re not considering that the job market is overflowing with those returning to work and recent graduates. As college graduates enter the workforce, they should be prepared for a competitive job market.” Despite these hardships, Moriah interviewed with Evergent while she was living in Tallahassee and made the decision to move to Colorado. Moriah pointed out that Evergent makes it a priority to hire younger applicants as a way of fostering positive growth in the next generation of the workforce and building their current employees’ knowledge and expertise. She was grateful to be a part of a company aligned with her interests.

Moriah’s current work for Evergent involves event planning for trade shows, writing lead content such as ebooks and videos, and creating email marketing events. She also handles some of the organizational work for Evergent’s marketing team by implementing project management tools for the team to meet deadlines and manage their projects properly. The editing and interpersonal skills Moriah developed during her role with the EIP carried over to her job at Evergent, and she said these skills, along with her EWM degree, helped her stand out as a detail-oriented applicant who would be able to effectively revise and improve content.

While she is still early in her career with room to change and grow, Moriah knows she wants to stay in the tech industry and continue working at Evergent and honing her crafts in writing, editing, and planning. One long term goal she has, however, would be to move up in the tech industry and possibly work as a Communications Director or other higher-level role. Regardless of where life takes her, the work experience, skills, and connections she has gained from her undergraduate and postgraduate careers have given her the tools she needs to succeed on the job market.
